The Government of Canada has announced a major $755 million investment in sports as part of the Spring Economic Update 2026. The funding aims to strengthen communities, improve access to sports programs, and support athletes across the country. The plan also highlights how sports can help newcomers and immigrants feel connected and included in Canadian society.
“The Spring Economic Update 2026 builds on the momentum of our budget, combining strategic investments with sustained fiscal discipline to keep building Canada Strong for All – delivering prosperity today and strengthening our economy for tomorrow,” said the Minister of Finance and National Revenue, François-Philippe Champagne.
Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Lena Metlege Diab said the investment will help create safer and more inclusive communities for Canadians. This will be beneficial, especially youth and newcomers, in feeling more connected and involved in the community.
“Sport has the power to bring people together, build confidence and create a sense of belonging in every community across Canada. Our government is making meaningful investments to expand access to sport so that more Canadians—especially youth and newcomers—can participate, connect and thrive,” she noted.
A key project includes a $4 million investment in the Mayflower Curling Club to build a modern and accessible facility. The project is expected to remove barriers to participation and encourage people from all backgrounds to stay active and involved.
The government says sports play an important role in helping immigrants settle into life in Canada. Community sports programs can help newcomers build friendships, improve language skills, and feel a stronger sense of belonging. Access to local sports facilities and activities also supports mental health and social integration for new families arriving in Canada.

The federal government says these investments are part of a broader plan to build a stronger economy, create jobs, and make Canadian communities more connected and resilient for everyone.
