Express Entry Canada – A Simple Guide to the Fastest PR Route

Express Entry Overview

Express Entry is Canada’s online system for managing permanent residency (PR) applications from applicants inside or outside Canada. It is a point based system where applicants are given points based on their age, work experience, education level, language skills and more. When IRCC holds a new draw for express entry, to send Invitation to Apply (ITA) to applicants in the pool, it picks the candidates from the top with the highest score.

Programs Under Express Entry

1. Canadian Experience Class (CEC): This is for people who have work experience in Canada.

2. Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP): This is for those with foreign work experience such as managers and supervisors (in Canada or abroad).

3. Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP): This is for those with work experience in skilled trades such as construction, transportation, manufacturing and industrial & natural resources and agriculture (in Canada or abroad).

Express Entry Application Process Step by Step

  • Check Eligibility: Make sure you qualify for at least one of the Express Entry programs i.e. CEC, FSWP or FSTP.
  • Language Requirements Test: All Express Entry programs need proof of language skills. So complete language requirement tests (IELTS, CELPIP, TEF) as per the program you are applying to.
  • Educational Credential Assessment (ECA): If you need to submit education credentials as a requirement of the program, you need to get an ECA report, if you have completed your education outside Canada.
  • Create Express Entry Profile: Create Express Entry profile to enter in the pool of candidates. The Express Entry system will calculate your eligibility and assign you a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score once you have created the profile. Sometimes the system takes a few hours to days to calculate your eligibility and CRS score.
  • Receive an ITA (Invitation to Apply): If IRCC holds a round of invitation and your CRS score is high enough as per cutoff, you will likely get ITA in your Express Entry profile. You have 60 days to apply for permanent residency, from the day you received your ITA. If you missed 60 days, your ITA will be automatically cancelled.
  • Submit PR Application: Within 60 days, you need to submit a complete permanent residence application with all required documentation, as per your Express Entry program you are applying for. You also need to pay the application fee as well, which is typically $1500 for 1 candidate.
  • Wait for Processing: Most applications are processed in about 6 months. Once your application is approved, you will receive a confirmation of permanent residence (COPR).
  • Get Permanent Resident (PR) Card: Most applicants will receive a PR card in mail after a few weeks, once you received your CoPR.

Express Entry Profile

To get invited by IRCC to be a permanent resident of Canada, you need to have a profile in the Express Entry system. You need to create a profile by answering questions like your education, work experience, language, family etc, and then the Express Entry online system will check your eligibility. If Express Entry online system found you are eligible for at least one stream under Express Entry, it will assign you a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score and rank your profile accordingly.

Once IRCC holds a new Express Entry draw, candidates with the highest score as per cutoff, will get an Invitation to Apply (ITA) to apply for permanent residency in Canada.

If you are not invited within 12 months, your Express Entry profile will automatically expire. You will get a message from IRCC about the expiry of your profile. You are free to create another Express Entry profile again, as long as you are eligible for at least one program under Express Entry.

Express Entry Multiple Profiles

It is not recommended to create multiple profiles under the Express Entry system. If you are eligible for multiple programs under Express Entry, you still need a single Express Entry profile. IRCC will verify your eligibility for all programs under the Express Entry, when you create an Express Entry profile. If you create multiple profiles, IRCC will possibly detect it.

If your profile expires, you can always create a new one. If your profile is expiring soon, it is recommended to either wait for it to expire, or withdraw your existing profile before creating a new one.

Express Entry Pool of Candidates

All the applicants waiting for Express Entry ITA, form a digital waiting list, which is known as the Pool of Candidates in Express Entry system. Once you create an Express Entry profile, you will also become part of this digital waiting list and within the pool of candidates. Everyone in the pool has a CRS score assigned based on scoring factors i.e. age, work, education, language skills etc.

Once IRCC holds a new Express Entry draw, candidates with the highest score as per cutoff, will get an Invitation to Apply (ITA) to apply for permanent residency in Canada.

Express Entry vs. Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)

Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) is another great program to be eligible for Canada’s permanent residency, especially if your CRS score is low and you are not getting ITA under Express Entry profile. The PNP program is managed by provinces and territories, and processing time, eligibility all depend on the requirements of the province that you are applying for. The following is the quick high level comparison of Express Entry vs Provincial Nominee Program (PNP):

Express Entry Funds Requirements

If you are applying under Canadian Experience Class (CEC), then you don’t need to show proof of funds to IRCC, as part of requirements. If the Express Entry system still asks you to upload proof of funds for your CEC application, you can simply upload a letter of explanation that you are applying under CEC and be exempted from showing proof of funds.

For both Federal Skilled Worker Program and the Federal Skilled Trades Program, proof of funds is required, unless you have a valid job offer and are authorized to work in Canada.

Here is the breakdown of how much money you need to show when you need to show proof of funds as part of your application.

Number of family membersFunds you need (in Canadian dollar)
1$14,690
2$18,288
3$22,483
4$27,297
5$30,690
6$34,917
7$38,875
Each Additional Family MemberAdd $3,958

You might need official bank letters & statements to show that money belongs to you and you have access to it when you land in Canada.

While calculating family size, you need to include yourself, your spouse or common-law partner, your dependent children and your spouse or common-law partner’s dependent children as well. No matter if they are Canadian citizens or permanent residents, or not even coming to Canada with you, you still need to count all these members while calculating family size.

Example: If you are married and you have 3 children, your family count is 5 by counting yourself, your spouse & 3 children. No matter if you are only coming to Canada and your children and spouse will stay in another country, you still need to count all family members and show proof of funds as per family size of 5.

Express Entry Draws

IRCC holds rounds of invitation (draw) throughout the year. There is no set pattern like bi-weekly or monthly draws, when a new draw would happen. When a new draw happens, IRCC choose following:

  • The cutoff CRS score for the draw
  • How many candidates to invite
  • Which type of round (general, program specific or category-based)

Different types of draws (rounds)

  • 1. General draw: No matter for which program you are eligible for under Express Entry, candidates with the highest CRS score will be invited as per draw cutoff score.
  • 2. Program-specific draw: Candidates who are eligible for specific programs under Express Entry, will be picked up based on their CRS score. For example, if CEC only draws happens, then candidates who are waiting for ITA and accepted in pool under CEC program, will be invited if they have met CRS score cutoff as per draw.
  • 3. Category-based draw: Candidates who are in the Express Entry pool, and have some specific work experience or language skills, will be invited as per category-based draw instructions. Only highest CRS score candidates for this category will be picked up.

Understanding Express Entry CRS Score

When you create an Express Entry profile, the IRCC system will assign you a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score. An applicant can have a maximum of 1200 CRS score. IRCC will score your profile based on following criteria:

  • Age Maximum 110 points
  • Language skills Maximum 160 points
  • Education Maximum 150 points
  • Canadian work experience - Maximum 80 points
  • Brother or sister living in Canada (18 years or older, citizen or permanent resident) - 15 points
  • Provincial or territorial nomination - 600 points
  • Post-secondary education in Canada - 30 points
  • And more

Note: If you are also including your spouse in your application, you will likely lose some points. But if your spouse is not coming to Canada, you may have more points.

Express Entry and Family Sponsorship

You can include your spouse or common-law partner and dependent children as well, while submitting a full application for permanent residency in Canada. You need to provide following while including any family member to application:

  • Pay application fees for each family member included.
  • Some required documents for each of your family member.
  • Might need biometrics of each person on the application.

Even if you haven’t included them in your application, you might be able to sponsor your family members, if you are currently a permanent resident of Canada or a Canadian citizen. Please go through full details here - how to sponsor your family members.

Express Entry for Applicants Outside Canada

Applicants who are willing to migrate to Canada as a permanent resident, can apply for the Federal Skilled Worker Program or the Federal Skilled Trades Program under Express Entry.

To get invited under any of these programs, you need to have a valid Express Entry profile in the pool. If you have a good CRS score, you will likely be picked up if a round of invitation happens for your use case.

In most cases, you need to show proof of funds as well as part of your application.

Express Entry for Applicants Inside Canada

If you are already legally living and working in Canada, you might be eligible for one or all programs under Express Entry. Most candidates within Canada, usually eligible under CEC program, once they have valid 1 year of work experience in Canada. When IRCC holds a new CEC program specific round of invitation, CRS cutoff score is usually low compared with general draw. CEC candidates have less competition, as they only need to compete with inside Canada applicants.

Inside Canada applicants usually have more privilege and might be eligible for more than one program, if they have specific work experience, either working abroad or in Canada.
