37 Express Entry occupations can gain a major CRS advantage along with other existing category-based selection benefits if Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) moves ahead with its proposed high-wage occupation factor.
The proposal reflects IRCC's broader effort to align Express Entry selection with labour market outcomes and long-term economic success in Canada.
It emerged from IRCC's public consultation on Express Entry reforms, which ran from April 23 to May 24, 2026 and included a proposed high-wage occupation factor within the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS).
Based on the consultation framework, the proposed factor would apply to candidates with Canadian work experience or a qualifying Canadian job offer in a high-wage occupation.
What Is The High-Wage Occupation Factor?
IRCC has not announced how many CRS points the proposed factor would award. The consultation only proposed the concept of rewarding high-wage occupations within the CRS.
Canada is considering three wage tiers based on occupation-level earnings, not a candidate's personal salary. This means that two workers in the same occupation could receive the same CRS treatment even if they earn different wages.
Healthcare professionals, engineers, senior managers, researchers, teachers, transport specialists, and certain skilled trades workers will be at the top of the list.
Why This Matters for Express Entry
Many of the 37 occupations already qualify for category-based selection draws, which often have lower CRS cut-offs than general draws.
If a wage-based CRS bonus is added, these candidates could benefit twice:
- Lower category-based draw scores
- Additional CRS points in general Express Entry rounds
This would create a stronger pathway for candidates whose occupations align with Canada's long-term economic priorities.
